The wrestling community and beyond were stunned by the sudden and unexpected death of 26-year-old professional wrestler, Kurtis Chapman, known in the ring as “Mad Kurt.” Just days after celebrating Christmas with his family, Chapman was found deceased in his hotel room at the Ibis in Portsmouth, Hampshire, on December 28, 2023. An inquest subsequently ruled his death a suicide, leaving family, friends, and fans grappling with the inexplicable loss of a young talent with a seemingly bright future.
Chapman’s mother, Leah Chapman, testified at the inquest, describing her son’s deep passion for wrestling, a career that spanned various promotions across the country. While a temporary hiatus from the sport had left him heartbroken, he had recently reignited his wrestling career, organizing a future contest. Furthermore, he had found personal happiness by rekindling a relationship with his childhood sweetheart. The family Christmas celebration had been filled with laughter and games, offering no indication of the tragedy that would soon unfold. Leah Chapman expressed her utter bewilderment at her son’s actions, stating, “I have no idea why he did this.”
The inquest revealed that while Chapman had small amounts of alcohol and ketamine in his system, these were not contributing factors to his death. He was known to enjoy gambling, but had managed his finances responsibly, saving a portion of his winnings and remaining debt-free. Coroner Rosamund Rhodes-Kemp highlighted the seemingly positive aspects of Chapman’s life at the time of his death: his wrestling career was back on track, he had no financial worries, and he had just enjoyed a pleasant Christmas with his family, exhibiting no signs of distress. The coroner acknowledged the baffling nature of the situation, stating, “It’s a complete and utter mystery as to why he did it.”
Despite the lack of a clear explanation, the coroner concluded that Chapman had intentionally taken his own life. While the evidence pointed towards suicide, the absence of a readily apparent motive left a void of understanding for those left behind. The coroner expressed her deep sorrow at the tragic outcome, lamenting, “I can comfortably conclude that he took his own life and intended to do so, I just wish he hadn’t.”
Kurtis Chapman’s wrestling journey began in his teenage years in 2014, his hometown of Portsmouth being the starting point of a career that would take him across numerous promotions, including RevPro, Progress, and IPW. He achieved notable success, holding the RevPro British Cruiserweight Championship for six months in 2018, a testament to his talent and dedication to the sport. Revolution Pro Wrestling released a statement expressing their profound grief at the loss of their “dear friend,” describing him as a gifted technical wrestler with undeniable charisma and a magnetic personality, someone who would never be forgotten.
Chapman’s death underscores the critical importance of mental health awareness and the often-hidden struggles that individuals may face, even amidst seemingly positive circumstances. It serves as a stark reminder that appearances can be deceiving, and that reaching out for help is crucial, regardless of external perceptions. The tragedy has prompted calls for greater understanding and support for those battling mental health issues, reinforcing the message that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
