A chilling drive-by shooting outside a London church on Saturday night left a mother in her 40s dead and two men in their 30s seriously injured. The horrifying incident unfolded around 9:15 pm outside the River of Life Elim Pentecostal Church on Gifford Road in Harlesden, where a wake was being held for an elderly church member. Video footage captured the moment a black car slowly approached the group gathered outside the church before a gunman inside opened fire, unleashing seven shots. The street echoed with screams as people scattered, desperately seeking cover from the sudden barrage of bullets. The vehicle then sped away, leaving behind a scene of chaos and tragedy.
The targeted mother, described by a friend as a “brilliant woman” and a “light in all of our lives,” tragically died at the scene. She was a dedicated parent who worked tirelessly to provide her children with a happy life. Her senseless death has left her family devastated and her community reeling in shock. A grieving relative arrived at the scene hours later, overcome with anguish and disbelief, crying out, “tell me this isn’t real,” before being comforted by police officers.
The two injured men, also in their 30s, were among those attending the wake. Pastor Lawrence Larbie, who witnessed the chaotic aftermath, stated that people at the scene knew the victims. He described the attackers as having “very deadly, evil intentions to cause death,” highlighting the targeted nature of the attack. The sudden eruption of violence abruptly ended the church gathering, plunging attendees into a scene of panic and grief.
Witnesses described the harrowing moments following the shooting. A neighbor recounted seeing people emerge from the church only to be confronted with the bodies lying on the ground, amidst cries and screams. Another resident, expressing fear and concern, hoped the victim was innocent, fearing potential retaliatory violence. Several residents recounted hearing the rapid succession of gunshots, initially mistaking them for fireworks. The terror and uncertainty gripping the community were palpable, with one longtime resident expressing a newfound sense of unsafety.
The Metropolitan Police quickly responded to the scene, establishing a cordon and launching a full-scale investigation. Forensics officers meticulously combed the area, searching for evidence and clues. A white and yellow evidence tent was erected in the middle of the road, marking the spot where the victim lost her life. Superintendent Tony Josephs expressed his shock at the incident and assured the community that a dedicated team of detectives was working tirelessly to identify those responsible and bring them to justice. He emphasized the devastating impact of the shooting on the victim’s family and urged anyone with information to come forward.
As of Sunday morning, no arrests had been made. The police maintained a heavy presence in the area, with road closures still in effect as forensic investigations continued. The investigation is ongoing, and police are appealing to the public for any information that could assist them in identifying the perpetrators. Anyone with information is urged to contact the police directly or anonymously through Crimestoppers. The tragic event has left a deep scar on the Harlesden community, highlighting the devastating consequences of gun violence and the urgent need for solutions to address this pressing issue.
