Osman Barkat, a 34-year-old primary school teacher at Brentfield Primary School in Neasden, North London, found himself at the center of a disciplinary hearing following a series of incidents involving inappropriate behavior towards his students. The culmination of these events led to his dismissal from the school in November 2021 and a subsequent ban from the teaching profession. His actions, characterized by a recurring inability to control his temper, painted a picture of a teacher struggling to maintain composure in the classroom, ultimately leading to detrimental consequences for himself, his students, and the reputation of the teaching profession.
The most prominent incident that sparked the investigation occurred in November 2020. During a classroom disagreement with a student, Barkat, in a fit of anger, challenged the child, saying, "You think you can teach better than me, come up and teach!" He then proceeded to throw a pen at the student in the presence of the entire class. The Teaching Regulation Agency panel, in their assessment of Barkat’s conduct, highlighted the severity of his actions and their potential long-term impact. They emphasized that his training, which included de-escalation techniques, should have equipped him to handle such situations more appropriately. His failure to utilize these skills and his repeated loss of composure demonstrated a disregard for the well-being of his students and the standards expected of a professional educator.
