A chilling act of premeditated violence unfolded outside a Merseyside nightclub, leaving a man seriously injured and a father-daughter duo facing lengthy prison sentences. Conor McQuade, 44, and his daughter Charlotte, 20 at the time, orchestrated a brutal stabbing attack on Lewis Reed, fueled by a long-standing grudge stemming from an unproven allegation Charlotte had made against him in 2020. The incident, captured on CCTV, depicted Conor stealthily approaching Reed from behind and repeatedly stabbing him while uttering the chilling words, “This is what you deserve.” Charlotte, a disturbingly passive observer, was seen laughing during the attack. This horrifying scene unfolded in the early hours of New Year’s Day outside The Hub nightclub in Widnes, highlighting the destructive consequences of unresolved grievances and the potential for familial loyalty to escalate into violence.

The roots of this violent act trace back to an allegation made by Charlotte against Reed in 2020. Despite Reed’s denial and the absence of any legal action taken against him, the McQuades harbored a deep-seated resentment. This festering animosity ultimately culminated in the New Year’s Day attack. In a victim impact statement read in court, Reed detailed the years of torment he endured due to Charlotte’s accusations, stating she had made his life “a living hell.” He emphasized that he had attempted to help her in the past when she was in a vulnerable situation, despite her reputation for drug use. He poignantly recounted missing his grandfather’s final moments due to the injuries he sustained in the attack, a tragic consequence of the McQuades’ vengeful act. This statement painted a picture of a victim unjustly targeted and profoundly impacted by the McQuades’ actions.

The events leading up to the stabbing revealed a calculated plan. Upon spotting Reed inside the nightclub on New Year’s Eve, Charlotte contacted her father. Conor, armed with two knives, promptly made his way to the scene. The pair met outside the club and finalized their plan, which culminated in Conor’s vicious attack on Reed as he stepped outside for a cigarette. The court heard that Conor stabbed Reed “down to the hilt,” emphasizing the severity of the attack and the clear intent to inflict serious harm.

This incident was not the first instance of violence between Conor and Reed. In 2023, a previous altercation resulted in Conor, who has a lengthy criminal history with 37 convictions for 67 offences, punching Reed. This prior incident provided further context to the escalating tension between them and highlighted Conor’s propensity for violence. Charlotte’s defense argued that she suffered from mental health issues, rendering her vulnerable, highly suggestible, and easily led. Her lawyer detailed a traumatic childhood marked by extensive violence, domestic abuse, and neglect, contributing to her mental health struggles. While these factors were considered, the judge ultimately determined that they did not significantly diminish her culpability in the premeditated attack.

Despite the defense’s arguments, the judge held Charlotte equally responsible for the attack. He pointed to her phone calls and messages alerting her father to Reed’s presence, her conversation with Conor outside the club, and her gesture indicating Reed’s location on CCTV footage. While she did not personally wield the knife, the judge concluded that she was fully aware of her father’s intention to cause serious harm and shared that intent. However, the judge did acknowledge mitigating factors, including Charlotte’s good character prior to the incident, her young age and relative immaturity, her expression of remorse, and her challenging upbringing and associated mental health issues.

Conor received a six-year prison sentence with an additional two years on license, while Charlotte was sentenced to five years. A restraining order was also imposed, prohibiting both from contacting Reed. A poignant scene unfolded in the courtroom as the father and daughter embraced in the dock before being led away. Members of the public gallery wept and shouted messages of support to Charlotte, underscoring the complex emotional dynamics surrounding this case. This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of unchecked anger and the potential for even familial bonds to be twisted into instruments of violence. The McQuades’ actions left a lasting impact on their victim, robbing him of precious moments with his dying grandfather and leaving him with physical and emotional scars. Their sentences reflect the gravity of their crime and the justice system’s commitment to holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
