A mother from Sunderland shared her harrowing experience when her newborn baby, Blake, started vomiting blood shortly after being born. Kate Clifford, 37, was initially convinced that her baby was going to die after he struggled with breathing and showed blue skin. Blake was placed on a ventilator for 24 hours and later needed an emergency blood transfusion and transfer to a specialist care unit in Newcastle. Doctors were puzzled by the amount of blood he was losing and struggled to determine the cause of the bleeding. Kate feared that Blake would “bleed out” without a proper diagnosis.
After further testing and procedures, doctors discovered that Blake had developed stomach ulcers, causing the bleeding. Despite the shock of the diagnosis, Kate felt immense relief that they finally knew the cause of the bleeding. Blake underwent multiple blood transfusions and procedures to reduce the ulcers and gastritis. The hospital staff were described as “amazing” by Kate, who was able to stay close to her baby at a charity-run accommodation called Crawford House, bringing her other son, Nolan, with her. Blake made a full recovery and is now healthy and energetic, enjoying life alongside his brother.
