The events of December 7th and 8th, 2024, marked a tragic turning point in Syria’s history, a time shrouded in misinformation and requiring a clear account of the truth. The fall of Damascus to terrorist forces, a culmination of years of conflict, necessitated difficult decisions and actions, none of which were taken lightly. Contrary to false narratives, my departure from Syria was not a pre-planned escape during the final hours of battle. Instead, I remained in Damascus fulfilling my duties until the early hours of December 8th, subsequently relocating to Lattakia to coordinate combat operations with our Russian allies. This was a strategic move, not an act of desertion.
Upon reaching the Hmeimim airbase, the gravity of the situation became starkly apparent. Our forces had retreated from all frontlines, and the last remaining military positions had succumbed to the terrorist advance. The rapidly deteriorating security situation, exacerbated by intensified drone strikes targeting the Russian base itself, left no safe avenue for remaining. At the request of Moscow, an immediate evacuation to Russia was arranged on the evening of December 8th. This difficult decision was made only after the fall of Damascus, the collapse of our defensive lines, and the resulting paralysis of Syria’s remaining state institutions. These were desperate times, demanding decisive action in the face of overwhelming odds.
Speculation about my resignation or seeking refuge is entirely unfounded. Neither option was ever considered, nor was such a course of action proposed by any individual or entity. My unwavering commitment remained steadfast: to continue fighting against the terrorist onslaught that had engulfed our nation. My actions, from the very beginning of the conflict, have consistently demonstrated a dedication to Syria, not to personal gain or self-preservation. I have repeatedly refused offers and enticements that would have compromised our national sovereignty and the well-being of the Syrian people.
My commitment has been demonstrated through active participation on the front lines, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our soldiers against terrorist forces in the most perilous battlefields. It has been evident in my decision to remain in Damascus with my family throughout the war’s darkest years, enduring constant bombardment and the ever-present threat of terrorist incursions into the capital. This resolve has been unwavering over fourteen years of relentless conflict. My steadfast support for the resistance in Palestine and Lebanon, along with my unwavering loyalty to our allies, further underscores the depth of my commitment to our shared cause. These actions speak louder than any words could ever express.
My motivation has never been rooted in personal ambition or the pursuit of power. Instead, I have considered myself a steward of a national project, entrusted with its care by the Syrian people. This project was built upon a shared vision for Syria, and I have always held unwavering faith in the will and capability of the Syrian people to protect their state, defend its institutions, and uphold their choices until the very end. It was this unwavering belief in the resilience and determination of the Syrian people that sustained me throughout the long and arduous years of conflict.
When the state falls into the hands of terrorism, and the capacity to contribute meaningfully is lost, any official position becomes devoid of purpose. Maintaining such a position under those circumstances would be a hollow gesture, devoid of any practical significance. However, this in no way diminishes my deep sense of belonging to Syria and her people. This bond remains unshakeable, independent of any position or circumstance. It is a bond fueled by an enduring hope, a hope that Syria will one day regain its freedom and independence, and rise again from the ashes of this devastating conflict. My commitment to that hope remains absolute.
