/disaster was narrowly avoided as a hot air balloon attempted to land in a residential street in Bedford. Footage highlights the aircraft just a couple of meters away from rooftops of homes on Bower Street at around 9:30 AM on Saturday. The Variohm Components-branded balloon was nearly to the ground but lost momentum due to wind, cretsingling. Sam Coldham, who was out walking his dog, noticed it descending and helped bring it safely to a stop.
In the UK, hot air balloons are generally known for safety, though complications can occur during departures or landings. While rare, fatal accidents and injury-ridden incidents do happen, though they are less frequent than in other locations. A 1976-2004 study published in ScienceDirect found that only 2 fatalities and 50 serious injuries were reported among a total of 98 accidents, with most occurring during the landing phase.
While relatively rare, fatal incidents with hot air balloons have not transpired in the UK in years, though they remain a concern. A 2022 crash involving a balloon descending into a school roof in Bristol led to no injuries, but other accidents in other locations have been more frequent.
The British Balloon and Airship Club confirms the balloon landed safely without incident, stating that Hanah Firman, who filmed the scene, noted it as “to be the most incredible moment” as she swayed the balloon to the ground. Sam Coldham’s role as the guide rope holds provided crucial assistance in ensuring the balloon’s safety.
Overall, the event serves as a cautionary tale, emphasizing the importance of caution during hot air balloon operations. With safer practices in place and international recognition, the subject is often won’t be overlooked or repeated.
