A former industrial site in Stoke-on-Trent is undergoing a major £60 million transformation to create a new urban neighborhood known as the Goods Yard. The development will include residential houses, restaurants, shops, cafes, and a public square. The square will feature green spaces, seating areas, over 70 trees and plants, a space for pop-up markets, and a canalside jetty with outdoor seating for food and drink. The developers, Capital&Centric, aim to bring in independent businesses such as bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and retail stores. In addition, there will be 174 homes for rent and a 150-bed hotel as part of the project’s second phase.
The development of Goods Yard is a success story for Stoke-on-Trent, the only polycentric city in the UK. Stoke has a rich industrial heritage, particularly in ceramics, and is home to attractions such as The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery and the Gladstone Pottery Museum. Visitors can also tour the Wedgwood Factory and the Emma Bridgewater Factory, as well as explore the Trentham Estate with its award-winning gardens, lake, maze, and Italianate garden. The city is known for its cultural and historical significance in the ceramics industry, making it a unique destination for tourists seeking to experience its proud past and vibrant present.
Travel guide creator Peter Naldrett, who visited Stoke-on-Trent as part of his research for his book, “Bright Lights, Big Cities,” highlights the city’s global reputation for ceramics. He recommends visiting Middleport Pottery in Burslem to learn about the pottery-making process and the industry’s significance to the region. Stoke-on-Trent offers a unique blend of cultural attractions, historical landmarks, and vibrant museums that showcase its rich industrial heritage and creative spirit. The city’s proximity to other major cities such as Wolverhampton and Nottingham makes it an accessible destination for travelers seeking a weekend getaway or a longer stay.
In addition to the redevelopment of Goods Yard, Stoke-on-Trent is set to welcome a new £75 million seaside attraction known as The Cove Resort in Southport. The development will include a beach thermal spa, a surfing lagoon, and a four-star hotel. The project is expected to enhance the city’s tourism offerings and attract visitors looking for seaside relaxation and entertainment. With ongoing investments in urban regeneration and tourism infrastructure, Stoke-on-Trent is positioning itself as a dynamic and diverse destination for travelers seeking cultural experiences, outdoor activities, and unique attractions. The city’s transformation reflects a commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing new opportunities for growth and development.
