Six-year-old Eva’s exclamation of “mansion” perfectly captured the grandeur of Cleveland House, our family’s weekend retreat in the charming coastal village of Winterton-on-Sea, Norfolk. This five-bedroom, four-bathroom luxury self-catering property, part of the Winterton Cottages collection, provided ample space for our family of six, plus our 18-week-old cockapoo, Stanley, who was embarking on his very first holiday. The house boasted a stylish interior, decorated in soothing beige and blue tones. A spacious conservatory with a large oak dining table, a modern kitchen, and a downstairs bedroom offered both communal areas and private retreats. The property’s dog-friendly policy, allowing up to four canine companions, made it the perfect choice for our furry family member. Beyond its size and amenities, Cleveland House exuded a sense of tranquility and comfort, making it an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Winterton-on-Sea itself offers a serene coastal escape, with miles of pristine beaches and scenic walking trails just steps from Cleveland House. The highlight of our trip, however, was an unexpected encounter with nature’s wonders. During the winter months, Winterton’s sandy shores become a haven for hundreds of grey seals, who come ashore to give birth. Initially planning a walk to observe these magnificent creatures, we opted for a short drive to nearby Horsey Gap due to inclement weather and the children’s reluctance to walk. This decision proved fortuitous, as the sight that awaited us was truly breathtaking.

Arriving at Horsey Gap, we were greeted by a vast expanse of seals stretching as far as the eye could see. Contrary to our expectations of tightly packed colonies, the seals were spread out along the beach, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. Volunteers from the Friends of Horsey Seals, a local conservation group, explained the designated walking loop that offered an hour-long immersion in this seal sanctuary. The sheer number of seals was astonishing, with thousands of adults and pups populating the beach. While the seals captivated our attention, the children’s attention spans eventually waned, prompting a slightly abbreviated exploration of the area.

Beyond the seal spectacle, Winterton-on-Sea offered other local delights. The Fisherman’s Return provided a cosy setting for a satisfying pub lunch, while Poppy’s tearoom served up delicious cooked breakfasts. Back at Cleveland House, the spacious lounge, with its impressive brick fireplace and wood-burning stove, became the setting for a lively family game of Pictionary, where the children triumphantly outscored the adults. As the storms raged outside, the warmth and comfort of the house provided a welcome refuge. And when the rain finally subsided, the children gleefully enjoyed a dip in the holiday home’s inviting hot tub.

While Winterton-on-Sea offered ample entertainment, nearby attractions beckoned. Great Yarmouth, just a short drive away, promised traditional seaside amusements and fish and chip shops. For those seeking a more urban experience, the historic city of Norwich, with its vibrant shopping scene and bustling markets, was easily accessible. However, for our children, the “mansion” itself proved to be the ultimate attraction. The novelty of a spacious holiday home, complete with a hot tub, and the excitement of Stanley’s first holiday created a memorable experience for the whole family.

Cleveland House, with its luxurious amenities, dog-friendly policy, and proximity to both natural wonders and local attractions, provided the perfect backdrop for a memorable family getaway. From the awe-inspiring sight of hundreds of grey seals to the simple pleasures of family games and hot tub relaxation, Winterton-on-Sea offered a unique blend of adventure and relaxation. The house itself, with its spacious layout and comfortable furnishings, became a cherished home away from home, creating lasting memories for both young and old. For a family seeking a coastal escape with a touch of luxury and the opportunity to witness nature’s wonders, Cleveland House in Winterton-on-Sea is an ideal choice.
