The Iron Duke, a historic pub in Great Yarmouth located by the sea, is set to reopen after being left empty since 2008. The Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust (GYPT) purchased the pub in 2021 and has raised nearly £300,000 for its restoration from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The plans for the reopening include restoring the original 1930s bars – one as Duke’s Bar with a retro beer and cocktail theme and the other as Iron Chop House, a restaurant with an open kitchen and grill offering fish, meat, and vegetable dishes. The second floor will be converted into two holiday flats, one of which will have a roof terrace.
Chris Carr, co-owner of Zaks who are leading the restoration plans, expressed excitement about the project’s concept and turning the pub into a destination rather than just a restaurant. The goal is to open the revamped Iron Duke by spring 2026, pending approval. GYPT chairman Bernard Williams described the project as “extraordinarily exciting” and highlighted the extensive surveys and planning that have been done to ensure the building’s restoration and future use. The overall vision is to bring the beautiful Art Deco building back to life in a way that honors its history while providing a fresh experience for visitors.
In addition to the restoration of the Iron Duke, other significant developments are taking place in Great Yarmouth, such as the expansion of Wellington Pier and the renovation of Britannia Pier, both set to be completed by spring 2025. The town is undergoing a revitalization process that aims to enhance its attractions and appeal to visitors. With its seaside location and historic charm, Great Yarmouth is poised to become a thriving destination that offers a mix of traditional and modern experiences for residents and tourists alike.
The Iron Duke’s reopening is part of a larger effort to revitalize Great Yarmouth and restore its historic landmarks. The restoration project aims to preserve the pub’s 1930s design and create a unique dining and leisure experience for guests. With plans for a beer garden, restaurant, and holiday flats, the Iron Duke will offer a variety of amenities that cater to different preferences and interests. The attention to detail in the restoration process, from architectural design to business planning, demonstrates a commitment to honoring the pub’s heritage while adapting it for contemporary use.
As part of the renovation plans for the Iron Duke, the pub will be transformed into a multi-functional space that combines elements of its past with modern amenities. The Duke’s Bar and Iron Chop House will provide visitors with diverse dining options that highlight local ingredients and culinary expertise. The holiday flats on the second floor offer guests the opportunity to stay in a historic setting while enjoying modern comforts. The overall goal is to create a vibrant destination that appeals to a wide range of visitors, from locals looking for a casual drink to tourists seeking a unique dining experience.
The reopening of the Iron Duke represents a significant milestone in the ongoing revitalization of Great Yarmouth. The project’s success will not only bring a beloved pub back to life but also contribute to the town’s cultural and economic growth. By preserving the pub’s historical significance and adapting it for modern use, the restoration project showcases a thoughtful approach to heritage conservation and community development. As Great Yarmouth continues to evolve and attract visitors from near and far, the Iron Duke’s revival is a testament to the town’s enduring appeal and commitment to preserving its architectural heritage.
