The former Griffin Park stadium of Brentford FC could potentially be transformed into a residential development consisting of 149 new homes. The iconic stadium, known for having a pub on each corner, was demolished after the club moved to their new Gtech Community Stadium in July 2020. However, the site has remained unused as planning permission is still needed for the proposed housing project. Property developer EcoWorld London is behind the plans to create 41 houses, two six-storey apartment blocks, and a single four-storey block on the site, with 30 homes designated for discount market sale for local residents.

EcoWorld London has submitted their proposal to Hounslow Council for approval. In addition to the 149 new homes, the development includes a commitment to providing 1770 square meters of public green space. The developers aim to enhance connectivity in the area by creating new pedestrian routes. The project also promises not to add any new rental properties to the market, focusing on home ownership instead. The council will now review the plans and decide whether to grant permission for the development to proceed.

Brentford FC was unable to bid farewell to Griffin Park in a traditional manner due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Their final match at the historic stadium against Swansea City in a Championship play-off semi-final was played behind closed doors. The last goal at Griffin Park was scored by Bryan Mbeumo in the 3-1 victory. The stadium was subsequently torn down, leaving only the boarded-up club shop as a reminder of the club’s long history at the ground since 1904. The closure of the club shop also marked the end of an era for fans who could no longer visit the site.

While Brentford FC’s move to the new Gtech Community Stadium was a significant milestone for the club, it also signaled the end of an era at Griffin Park. The potential transformation of the old stadium site into a residential development represents a new chapter in the area’s history. The proposed housing project by EcoWorld London aims to address the local housing needs by offering a mix of homes for ownership, including some designated for discounted market sale. The development also includes plans for public green space and improved pedestrian connectivity, contributing to the community’s overall well-being.

As the plans for the redevelopment of Griffin Park are considered by the local council, residents and fans of Brentford FC await the decision that will shape the future of the historic site. The transformation of the former stadium into a residential area is part of a larger trend of repurposing old sporting venues for new purposes. The legacy of Griffin Park will live on in the memories of fans who experienced the club’s successes and challenges at the iconic ground, while the new housing development will provide a fresh start for the site and contribute to the continued growth and development of the area.
