Altay Bayindir endured a nightmarish performance as Manchester United crashed out of the Carabao Cup against Tottenham Hotspur. The Turkish goalkeeper was directly responsible for two of Tottenham’s four goals, casting doubt on his ability to deputize for the error-prone Andre Onana. Bayindir’s first blunder came early in the game, parrying a Pedro Porro shot directly into the path of Dominic Solanke, who easily converted the rebound. His second howler occurred late in the match, allowing a Son Heung-min corner to sail directly into the net, sealing United’s fate. Despite a late rally sparked by substitute Amad Diallo, United’s defensive frailties and Bayindir’s errors proved too much to overcome.
United’s defensive performance was shaky throughout the match. Lisandro Martinez was particularly culpable, making several errors that directly contributed to Tottenham’s goals. His poor clearance gifted Dejan Kulusevski an easy finish, and he was easily bypassed by Solanke for another goal. Victor Lindelof also struggled, looking off the pace before being substituted due to injury in the first half. Only Diogo Dalot emerged with any credit from the backline, providing solid crosses and demonstrating some defensive awareness.
In midfield, Manchester United experienced mixed fortunes. While Bruno Fernandes provided some creative spark, assisting Joshua Zirkzee’s goal and creating other opportunities, Manuel Ugarte proved a liability. The Uruguayan midfielder was constantly fouling, conceding dangerous free-kicks and nearly scoring an own goal. Christian Eriksen, returning to his former club, had a quiet game, failing to convert a good early chance and delivering several ineffective corners.
Up front, Rasmus Hojlund failed to make an impact, struggling against Tottenham’s makeshift defence before being replaced by Zirkzee. Antony also had a disappointing evening, frequently losing possession and offering little in attack. Substitutes Zirkzee and Diallo injected much-needed energy and attacking impetus into United’s performance, with Zirkzee scoring a goal and Diallo’s relentless pressing forcing a goalkeeping error. Alejandro Garnacho, despite coming on later in the game, also showed some positive signs.
The match highlighted the depth issues within the Manchester United squad. While the first-choice starting eleven contains considerable talent, the backup options appear to lack the quality required to compete at the highest level. Bayindir’s performance in particular raises serious concerns about the goalkeeping situation should Onana continue to struggle with errors. The defensive frailties also need addressing, with Martinez’s inconsistent form a worrying sign.
Despite the eventual defeat, the introduction of substitutes Zirkzee, Diallo, and Garnacho offered a glimmer of hope for Manchester United. Diallo, in particular, demonstrated the kind of energy and determination that had been lacking from the starting eleven. His pressing forced an error from Tottenham goalkeeper Fraser Forster and led to United’s second goal. While the result was ultimately disappointing, the performance of these substitutes suggests that there is some promising young talent within the squad waiting for an opportunity. The challenge for manager Erik ten Hag will be to integrate these players effectively and address the defensive weaknesses that have plagued the team.
