Wales has recorded more than 1,600 new positive cases of coronavirus in the latest update from Public Health Wales.

Data published on Sunday, August 22 identified 1,626 new cases in Wales over the past 48 hours bringing the total number since the pandemic began to 261,509.

T were also five new Covid-19 deaths reported in Wales, meaning the total number of people who have died within 28 days of testing positive now stands at 5,656.

The latest infection rate across Wales as a whole is now 245.7 per 100,000 people based on the seven days up to August 16 – up from 226.1 recorded on Friday. Every single local authority reported a rise when compared to the previous data, except Blaenau Gwent.

The figures are based on the date a test was done, not the date a test was put on the system, meaning it is an accurate reflection of how fast the virus is spreading in Wales.

The area with the highest infection rate in Wales remains Denbighshire with 402.3 new cases per 100,000 population followed by Newport with 318.1.

The area with the highest number of cases in the latest period was Swansea with 208, followed by Rhondda Cynon Taf with 139, Cardiff with 120, Carmarthenshire with 102, Neath Port Talbot with 92, Bridgend with 81 and Caerphilly with 80.

Meanwhile the Vale of Glamorgan had 71 new cases, Wrexham had 69, Flintshire had 63, Gwynedd had 61, Denbighshire had 50, Powys had 51, Conwy had 59, Newport had 56, Pembrokeshire had 55, Torfaen had 42 and Monmouthshire had 41 and Ceredigion 40.

The areas with the lowest cases were Blaenau Gwent with 22, Anglesey with 20 and Merthyr Tydfil with 18.

The high number of cases the Swansea Bay area are being linked to people who attended the Boardmasters music festival in Cornwall.

At least 56 positive cases have been confirmed in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot linked to the 50,000-capacity event, which took place between August 11 and 15.

Swansea Bay University Health Board is now urging anyone who went to the festival to get a PCR test immediately if they develop symptoms. More details .
