Festive ‘Friendsmas’ celebrations have become a popular tradition, typically held on 14th December according to recent research. A survey of 2,000 adults who celebrate Christmas found that seven in 10 are planning to meet up with friends during the holiday season to celebrate. Reasons cited for enjoying these gatherings with friends over family include a more relaxed and informal atmosphere, the opportunity to express gratitude, less stress, avoiding family tensions, and simply having more fun.

The research was commissioned by Lily O’Brien’s chocolates, who have partnered with TV presenter Angela Scanlon to highlight the importance of Friendsmas celebrations. Angela Scanlon noted that Friendsmas is a special moment in the seasonal calendar, allowing people to connect with friends who feel like family and creating new memories outside of traditional obligations. As people grow older, they often find it challenging to find time to catch up with friends over Christmas due to conflicting social events, work schedules, and family commitments.

The study also revealed that the average person has been celebrating Friendsmas for 10 years with the same group of loved ones, with many marking the festivities with childhood friends. Popular traditions for Friendsmas celebrations include sharing secret Santa gifts, visiting Christmas markets, and enjoying a movie marathon featuring classic holiday films such as Home Alone, The Holiday, and A Christmas Story. Music also plays a significant role at Friendsmas shindigs, with top song choices including festive classics by Mariah Carey, Wizzard, and Wham.

Angela Scanlon shared her top tips for hosting a memorable Friendsmas celebration, emphasizing the importance of making time for one’s tribe and planning early to ensure quality time together before the holiday rush. She also suggested adding fun elements such as tacky Christmas jumper contests, themed Secret Santa exchanges, and a delicious spread of festive nibbles and desserts. Creating a shared playlist with input from all attendees can enhance the party atmosphere, allowing everyone to contribute their favorite tunes for the occasion.

Scanlon encouraged guests to switch off and be present during Friendsmas gatherings, urging them to focus on connecting with friends and leaving behind the stress of the holiday season. By creating a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere with good food, music, and entertainment, Friendsmas celebrations offer a chance to unwind, share laughter, and create lasting memories with cherished friends. With traditions like Friendsmas becoming more popular, these gatherings provide an opportunity to appreciate the importance of friendship and strengthen bonds during the festive season.
