The incident began with a seemingly terrifying home invasion captured on CCTV. Two masked men, brandishing what appeared to be shotguns, confronted Inderjeet Gosal at his Leeds residence on July 31, 2020. Gosal, visibly shaken, engaged with the masked figures who warned him to “stay out of Jonny’s business” and to cease involvement in his sister’s legal proceedings. A woman accompanying the masked men also interacted with Gosal, whom he feebly attempted to pull away before contacting the police. The dramatic scene suggested a serious threat related to an ongoing divorce involving Gosal’s sister, Hardeep Sangha, and her ex-husband, Harpal Sangha, also known as Jonny or Jon. Gosal’s wife and sister were present in the house during the incident.

Following the reported home invasion, police swiftly apprehended Harpal Sangha on suspicion of witness intimidation. He was held in custody for 15 hours before being released and cleared of any involvement. A crucial turning point in the investigation came when officers reviewing the CCTV footage detected laughter in the background following the supposed gun threat. This seemingly minor detail sparked suspicion, prompting a deeper examination of the events and the individuals involved. The investigation then took an unexpected turn, uncovering a previous incident involving Harpal Sangha as the victim of a firearms-related setup. In April 2017, police had received information about a sawn-off shotgun hidden in the garden of Harpal’s Huddersfield home. The discovery of the weapon led to his arrest on firearms charges.

Forensic analysis of the shotgun revealed DNA evidence linking it to Sabu Singh, Hardeep Sangha’s boyfriend. This discovery exposed a plot to frame Harpal Sangha, leading to Singh’s conviction for possession of a firearm without a certificate and perverting the course of justice. He received a three-year prison sentence in November 2018. Hardeep Sangha also received a two-year suspended sentence for her involvement in the scheme. The investigation into the alleged home invasion continued, revealing that the “gunmen” were actually Kane Allen and Matias Jozio, then aged 16 and 17 respectively. Further investigation revealed Sabu Singh as the mastermind behind the elaborate charade, orchestrating the staged gun threat to target Harpal Sangha. The conspirators even made threatening phone calls following the incident to further their deception.

The web of deceit continued to unravel as the investigation progressed. On September 2, 2020, just a day before a court hearing related to Hardeep and Harpal’s divorce, five masked men targeted Harpal Sangha’s parents’ convenience store, located beneath his residence in Huddersfield. One of the men shouted “tell Jonny to pay” before the group caused £2,000 worth of damage to the shop. Jozio was identified as one of the individuals involved, with Kane Allen and Sabu Singh implicated in organizing the attack. The final act in this complex drama unfolded on September 28, 2020, when police arrested the Gosals at their home and Hardeep Sangha at her property, where Sabu Singh was discovered hiding in the attic bedroom.

The culmination of the investigation led to the arrest and prosecution of all six individuals involved in the elaborate conspiracy. They faced charges of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, with Singh, Allen, and Jozio also charged with conspiracy to commit criminal damage in relation to the attack on the convenience store. The sentencing reflected the severity of their crimes and the extent of their deception. Hardeep Sangha received a sentence of four years and seven months, while Inderjeet Gosal was jailed for three years and one month. Harpreet Gosal received a suspended sentence of nine months, along with community service and rehabilitation requirements. Kane Allen and Matias Jozio also received suspended sentences, community service, and curfews. Sabu Singh, the architect of the plot, was sentenced to three years and seven months in prison.

This intricate case highlights the serious consequences of fabricating criminal activity and attempting to manipulate the justice system. The investigation, initially focused on a reported gun threat, ultimately exposed a web of deceit orchestrated by Sabu Singh to target Harpal Sangha. The lengths to which the conspirators went to enact their fabricated narrative underscores the importance of thorough police investigation and the eventual triumph of truth over deception. Detective Chief Inspector Michael Herbert, who led the investigation, emphasized the serious nature of firearms-related reports and the dedication of law enforcement to uncover the truth, regardless of the complexity of the case. The successful outcome serves as a deterrent to those who believe they can manipulate the police and the justice system for personal gain.
