James Campbell, a bestselling children’s author, embarked on a radical lifestyle change following a divorce, driven by a desire to live more sustainably. This transformation led him to downsize drastically, moving from a five-bedroom house to an 8ft-wide mini-home, shedding 90% of his possessions in the process. His initial foray into minimalist living involved a luxury caravan equipped with a wood-burning stove and solar panels, situated on a three-acre field that had lain unused for four decades. While he enjoyed the caravan experience, the limited space prompted him to seek a slightly larger, more permanent solution. This pursuit of a more eco-conscious life also encompassed adopting a vegan diet, abstaining from air travel, and exclusively purchasing second-hand goods.

Driven by his commitment to minimize his environmental impact, Campbell invested £60,000 in a mini-home on the same plot of land. However, the path to sustainable living wasn’t without its challenges. The property, purchased from less-than-reputable sellers, presented a series of issues, including a “rat incident” stemming from holes in the foundation. A more dramatic incident involved bees nesting in the wall around live wiring, resulting in a small electrical fire and the unfortunate demise of two flaming bees. These setbacks, though concerning, didn’t deter Campbell from his goal. Despite facing these initial hurdles and acknowledging a preference for having built the home himself, he ultimately expressed satisfaction with his tiny home.

The compact 7m by 2.5m dwelling, while admittedly a “squeeze” at times, has proven surprisingly accommodating for Campbell and his two children, an 18-year-old son and an 8-year-old daughter. His son, who is autistic, particularly appreciates the simplicity of the mini-home. Both children enjoy spending time outdoors and have adapted well to the smaller living space, demonstrating a lack of complaints about their unconventional home. The mini-home retains the essential features of a conventional house, including two bedrooms, a gas stove, oven, fridge, washing machine, and storage batteries, but with added eco-friendly modifications.

One of the most significant advantages of the mini-home is its remarkable energy efficiency. Solar panels on the roof generate the majority of the home’s electricity, resulting in an incredibly low annual energy bill of just £150. The house is exceptionally well-insulated, thanks to its thick, timber-clad exterior walls and triple-glazed windows, minimizing the need for supplementary heating. Rainwater is collected and filtered, further reducing reliance on external resources. While solar power provides the primary energy source, Campbell acknowledges the use of propane gas for heating during the winter months, admitting it as the “dirty secret” of off-grid living, necessitated by the limited sunlight during the colder season.

Beyond the financial savings, Campbell embraces a self-sufficient lifestyle, cultivating a “food forest” garden where he grows his own fruits and vegetables. He attributes his dramatic shift in lifestyle to a “lockdown-inspired breakdown,” which prompted him to re-evaluate his priorities and embrace a more sustainable and fulfilling way of life. He relishes the simplicity and connection to nature that his new lifestyle affords. The transition has provided him with a sense of purpose and fulfillment, fostering a deeper appreciation for the environment and a more minimalist approach to living.

Despite the numerous benefits of his eco-conscious lifestyle, Campbell acknowledges one missing element: a partner to share it with. He expresses a desire for companionship and someone to share the joys and challenges of his unique way of life. While content with his children and their adaptation to the mini-home, he feels the absence of an adult companion to fully appreciate the experience. This desire for connection underscores the importance of human relationships even within a context of simplified living and environmental consciousness.

Campbell’s journey reflects a growing trend towards downsizing and embracing sustainable living. His story serves as an inspiration for those seeking to reduce their environmental footprint and live a more intentional life. While his path has been marked by both challenges and triumphs, his commitment to his values and his ability to adapt to a drastically different lifestyle demonstrates the potential for positive change. His story resonates with the growing awareness of environmental issues and the search for more sustainable and fulfilling ways of living.
