The Bakerloo-Inspired Superloop: A New Express Bus Route for Southeast London

Southeast London commuters can anticipate a significant improvement in travel times with the introduction of the "Bakerloop," a new express bus route designed to swiftly connect Waterloo and Lewisham. Part of the expanding Superloop network, officially known as Superloop 2, the Bakerloop is designed to emulate the speed and efficiency of the London Underground’s Bakerloo line, even adopting its signature brown color scheme. This initiative addresses the current lack of comprehensive Tube service in southeast London, aiming to stimulate job creation, housing development, and overall regeneration. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has expressed confidence that the Bakerloop will demonstrate the high demand for efficient public transport in the area, potentially influencing future infrastructure investments, including the long-discussed Bakerloo line extension.

The Bakerloop project is gaining momentum with a six-week public consultation launched to gather feedback on the proposed route details. The Mayor emphasized the route’s potential to be faster than private car travel, highlighting the importance of reliable public transport in easing congestion and boosting local economies. He also expressed his hopes that the success of the Bakerloop will encourage government funding and developer interest in further enhancing transport links in this underserved area. The Bakerloop, slated to launch in Autumn 2025 pending consultation outcomes, will follow a route mirroring the proposed Bakerloo line extension, offering a more immediate solution to the area’s transit needs while the extension project awaits funding confirmation.

Superloop Expansion: Enhancing Connectivity Across Outer London

The Bakerloop represents just one piece of the larger Superloop puzzle. The Superloop network, envisioned as a series of express bus routes circling outer London, aims to improve connectivity and reduce travel times between key destinations. Nine initial Superloop routes are already in operation, with a tenth – connecting Canary Wharf and Grove Park via the soon-to-open Silvertown Tunnel – scheduled to launch in April 2024. The introduction of Superloop 2, with its proposed ten additional routes, signals a substantial investment in outer London’s public transport infrastructure.

Superloop 2’s proposed routes encompass a wide swathe of London, connecting areas like Harrow and Barnet, Barnet and Stratford, Leytonstone and South Havering, North Greenwich and Thamesmead, Streatham and Eltham, Richmond and Wimbledon, Ealing Broadway and Kingston, Hounslow and Hammersmith, and Hendon and Ealing Broadway. These routes are strategically planned to improve cross-borough travel and provide faster alternatives to existing bus services, thereby encouraging greater use of public transport and reducing reliance on private vehicles.

Bakerloop Route Details and Public Consultation

The Bakerloop will operate between Waterloo and Lewisham, making limited stops at key interchange points: Elephant & Castle, Old Kent Road, New Cross Gate, and Lewisham. This express approach, minimizing the number of stops, is a key factor in reducing journey times. Fares are expected to align with standard bus fares, making the Bakerloop an affordable and efficient travel option. The exact locations of the bus stops are still under consideration, and Transport for London (TfL) is actively seeking public input through the ongoing consultation which will close on March 14th.

The consultation process is crucial for incorporating local knowledge and addressing community concerns before the Bakerloop’s implementation. Residents and businesses in areas like New Cross have expressed their need for improved transport links, especially when existing services like the Overground experience disruptions. The Bakerloop aims to provide a reliable and comfortable alternative, relieving pressure on existing bus routes and ensuring a more consistent travel experience.

Addressing Congestion and Improving Bus Service Reliability

The Mayor of London acknowledged the challenges posed by traffic congestion and frequent roadworks, which often impact bus service reliability. He highlighted how the Superloop model addresses these issues by utilizing dedicated bus lanes and minimizing stops, resulting in significantly faster journey times. Moreover, the Mayor emphasized efforts to reduce disruptive roadworks by imposing higher costs on utility companies and enforcing better coordination to minimize disruption to traffic flow. These measures, combined with the express nature of the Superloop routes, are expected to create a more efficient and predictable bus service, attracting more passengers and contributing to a greener, more sustainable transport system.

The implementation of the Bakerloop and further expansion of the Superloop network represents a significant step towards improving outer London’s public transport infrastructure. By providing faster, more reliable, and affordable travel options, these new routes aim to enhance connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and create a more sustainable transport network for Londoners. The ongoing consultation process emphasizes the importance of public engagement in shaping these vital transport initiatives.
