A 73-year-old British sailor has gone missing in the turbulent waters of the Bay of Biscay, off the western coast of France, after his yacht was found severely damaged and abandoned amidst stormy conditions. The sailor, whose identity remains undisclosed, was aboard his 12-meter yacht named Tiger PA when the incident occurred. The vessel, according to online tracking data, had departed from Weymouth port in Dorset, England on January 20th, having arrived there approximately 36 hours prior.
The initial alarm was raised by UK authorities on Friday evening, prompted by a lack of response from the Tiger PA to radio communications. Subsequently, a cargo ship successfully established contact with the sailor, who assured them of his safety. However, this brief reassurance proved tragically deceptive. The following day, at 3 pm, a distress signal emanating from the Tiger PA was detected approximately 50 miles off the coast of Lacanau, France, triggering an immediate rescue operation.
A helicopter dispatched to the scene located the yacht approximately two and a half hours later, discovering it in a severely damaged state, described as “ripped open.” Divers deployed from the helicopter found the yacht’s life raft empty, raising immediate concerns for the sailor’s well-being. A multi-national search effort was rapidly initiated, involving a Spanish hospital ship, a French navy aircraft, and a Portuguese-flagged cargo ship. Despite their concerted efforts, the search was ultimately suspended at 1:33 am the following morning due to the lack of any new information or sightings.
The incident coincided with the passage of Storm Eowyn, which brought strong winds of approximately 55 mph and heavy rain to northern France on Friday morning. The challenging weather conditions undoubtedly played a significant role in the unfolding tragedy. The Atlantic Maritime Prefecture, responsible for maritime safety in the region, issued a cautionary advisory urging individuals to exercise extreme caution when venturing out to sea during the winter months, particularly in light of the prevalent stormy conditions.
