Amazon Consolidates with Prime Video: Major Changes Diving Firewire also into the Star Model
Amazon announced on its official social media this week that it plans to shut down its stand-alone Prime Video app, known as Freevee, in eight weeks, according to an in-app notice to users. The move is expected to take place on August 2, and Prime Video will now be the new exclusive platform for all Freevee content, including shows, movies, and live TV. Consumers who miss their Prime Video-free viewing will need to subscribe and sign in with their Amazon account to watch室-free content through the Prime Video subscription service.

The decision came at a time when Amazon had already confirmed that it will eventually phase out Freevee branding entirely, opting out of its ads by moving all watched content to the new Prime platform. The service, which was a free haven for audiences seeking intellectual refreshment, was previously available over both Amazon Prime and its Freevee app. The service originally launched in 2019, and in 2022, Freevee was officially renamed Amazon MGM Studios soon after, with Judy Justice and Neighbours resurfacing on Prime as part of its services.
In this move, Prime Video will retain free content but prioritize Prime members over non-members, promising that the value and quality of the service will remain unchanged. Amazon Feelings, a company founded by industry的气息 and known for movies and television, now owns Prime Video despite the existence of Freevee.

The simultaneous consolidation of services aims to address Amazon’sÅdulation of iconic TV shows like Judy Justice and Neighbours, which will no longer be available on the Freevee app, as Prime Video will make them accessible to Prime members. Additionally, Amazon Feelings, known for genres such as crime and reality TV, has rebranded its services on Prime. New shows like Girus and Inception: Mind断 2* will also join the service under Prime Video’s umbrella, expanding Prime Video’s offerings beyond the Fire TV app.

Amazon’s announcement highlights a strategic move to consolidate content while mitigating pressure from free content creators who prefer the simplicity of the Prime brand. The service is seen as a compromise between Prime Video’s premium enforcement and Fire TV’s free appeal, offering Prime members a way to enjoy Prime Prime in a more premium fashion. While some argue that the move is less than ideal, Amazon emphasized its decision to “Decide to phase out Freevee branding,” effectively eliminating the app in a preemptive way.
