A WOMAN was raped in a layby after stopping to check on an unattended child seat at the side of the road.

The victim was driving along the A4 in leafy Thatcham, Berks, when she spotted the seat.

She then pulled over fearing a child was at risk but was pounced on by a sex attacker.

Police are now hunting the suspect, who is not believed to be known to the victim.

Officers are also trying to establish whether the car seat was linked to the horror on Monday.

They confirmed the woman is being supported by specially trained officers.

Police are asking anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from the A4 between 11pm on August 15 and 12.15am on August 16 to come forward.

Detective Inspector Alice Broad of Thames Valley Police, said: “Thames Valley Police is working to understand the significance of the child’s car seat and whether it is linked to the offence.

“However, to ensure the safety of the public, we would advise that if you see anything in a road or on the roadside that concerns you, make a note of the precise location and call Thames Valley Police on 101. The force can then make appropriate checks.

“This is a concerning incident and one that has understandably caused anxiety in the local community. However, such offences are extremely rare and a thorough investigation is underway to identify the offender.

“You will see more officers out and about in the area and I urge you to speak with them if you have any questions or concerns that you wish to raise.”

Anyone with information can call police on 101 quoting reference Op Fax 43210366130.
