Plans have been revealed to transform Cardiff Bay train station and construct a new station in Butetown. The proposals have been submitted to Cardiff Council by Amey Infrastructure Wales Ltd, and would see a new station being built for Butetown as well as the current Cardiff Bay station being upgraded.

The new Butetown station and the upgraded Cardiff Bay station would be served by “new electric metro vehicles,” according to the planning application. It adds that the works would “provide for improved transport links” to Loudoun Square and Cardiff Bay. The proposals would see a new station constructed at Butetown, with a new entrance from Bute Street and further access from Lloyd George Avenue at the east of the site.

The planning application also says it is responding to the Atlantic Wharf master plan, which will see a 15,000-capacity events arena, a new leisure centre, including a cinema, and a hotel being built in the area. Cllr Russell Goodway previously said that the master plan will “see significant improvements made to the public realm and to public transport links to the Bay.”

The master plan is also set to include a transport hub that would provide a main terminus and interchange on Pierhead Street for new tram-train services and bus services to Cardiff Bay, however, the planning application notes that this would be separate from the proposed transformation of the station.

The distance between the new Butetown station and Cardiff Bay station would be approximately 350m. The platforms would extend for approximately 125m and include ticket machines and a waiting shelter on each platform, according to the proposed plans.

T would be newly created stepped and ramped access to Lloyd George Avenue, and steps and a lift from platform level to Bute Street. An existing underpass would remain approximately 20m to the south of Butetown Station to provide pedestrian access underneath the railway line.

As part of the proposals, a new pedestrian route would be constructed north of Glanhowny Close, which would provide access via a ramp from Lloyd George Avenue, with a route across the track to access onto Bute Street which would consist of a ramp in two sections, and a staircase down to street level.

Cardiff Bay station would also be upgraded as part of the plans, with the existing platforms being removed and a new entrance being constructed from Lloyd George Avenue. A newly constructed central platform would serve both tracks and, according to the planning application, has been designed to accommodate those visiting the arena proposed as part of the Atlantic Wharf masterplan.

A staff accommodation building, which would be oval shaped “in the colour of TfW ” with two shades of grey and red trim around the window and eaves, would be provided on the main platform, along with two shelters for passengers, as well as a new square at the main entrance to Cardiff Bay Station. A new section of double track would also be laid from Queen Street South junction and extend to the site. The plans will now be considered by Cardiff council’s planning department.
