The Range Expands with Hybrid Homebase Stores: A New Era in Retail

The retail landscape is constantly evolving, with businesses adapting and merging to meet changing consumer demands. The recent acquisition of numerous Homebase stores by CDS Superstores, the parent company of The Range, exemplifies this trend. A wave of new hybrid stores, blending The Range, Homebase, and even Wilko products, is sweeping across the UK. These stores offer a diverse range of homeware, DIY supplies, and garden products, creating a one-stop shopping experience for customers. One such store recently opened its doors in Christchurch, Bournemouth, generating considerable excitement among local shoppers. The 21,500 square foot space features a bright, modern interior, a dedicated Homebase garden center, and a streamlined click-and-collect area for online orders.

The Bournemouth store’s grand opening saw eager shoppers queuing outside, greeted by a celebratory balloon arch. Inside, a fresh floor plan showcased a wide selection of products, from home décor to garden tools. The integrated Homebase garden center, brimming with plants and flowers, proved particularly popular. The efficient click-and-collect service further enhances the customer experience, providing a convenient option for those who prefer to shop online. Local councillor Paul Alan Hilliard officiated the opening ceremony, marking the beginning of a new chapter for retail in the area. The Bournemouth store is just one of many planned openings, signaling a significant expansion for The Range and a new direction for the Homebase brand.

The integration of Homebase into The Range portfolio represents a strategic move to capitalize on a struggling market. Homebase had fallen into administration in late 2024, leaving its future uncertain. CDS Superstores stepped in with a rescue deal, acquiring up to 70 stores through a pre-pack administration agreement. This move not only saved jobs but also provided an opportunity to revitalize the Homebase brand under The Range umbrella. The hybrid model allows CDS to leverage the strengths of both brands, offering a wider range of products and catering to a broader customer base. While some Homebase stores will unfortunately close, the rebranding effort aims to breathe new life into the majority of locations.

The rollout of these hybrid stores is proceeding at a rapid pace, with CDS aiming to open approximately three stores per week. Several opening dates have already been announced, including locations in Glasgow, Birmingham, Newton Abbot, Felixstowe, Blyth, Leicester, Stroud, and Blandford. This ambitious expansion reflects CDS’s confidence in the hybrid model and its potential for success. While the full list of rebranded stores is yet to be confirmed, the company aims to have 50 stores open by the end of April, with the possibility of more to follow. This aggressive timeline underscores their commitment to maximizing the potential of the acquired Homebase assets.

While the acquisition has provided a lifeline for many Homebase stores and employees, some locations remain at risk. Despite a deadline for potential buyers, the fate of approximately 74 stores is still unclear. Homebase had previously announced the closure of six stores, with further closures expected in Wales, Derry, Inverurie, Omagh, and Glenrothes. However, not all news is bleak for the former Homebase locations. B&Q, a rival DIY chain, has acquired eight former Homebase stores, demonstrating the ongoing dynamism within the retail sector. This acquisition further reshapes the DIY landscape, with B&Q expanding its footprint and capitalizing on the opportunities presented by Homebase’s restructuring.

The CDS buyout of Homebase not only saved approximately 1,600 jobs but also secured up to 70 store locations. These stores are being rapidly converted into The Range superstores, offering a revitalized shopping experience. Furthermore, CDS Superstores had previously acquired the Wilko brand and intellectual property after Wilko’s collapse into administration. This acquisition provides CDS with a diverse portfolio of brands and an expanded product offering. The integration of these brands under The Range umbrella positions CDS for growth and strengthens its presence in the competitive retail market. The future of retail is uncertain, but the adaptability and innovation demonstrated by companies like CDS Superstores indicate a willingness to evolve and meet the changing demands of consumers.
